About The Next Stage: The Future of Denver's Performing Arts Complex
Denver Arts & Venues, in partnership with other city agencies and the community, has launched a master planning process as part of Activate Denver's Urban Core for the Denver Performing Arts Complex, to generate a vision and plan for the 12-acre campus that advances Denver’s cultural and creative development and contributes to a diverse, vibrant and economically thriving downtown. We invite you to share your feedback below.

The Next Stage Vision Statement
The Denver Performing Arts Complex will be a vibrant, thriving, public regional center of cultural activity in the heart of downtown. It will attract diverse audiences, celebrate a variety of art forms, contribute to the city’s economic vitality, enhance Denver’s urban fabric, integrate with neighboring amenities, including the Colorado Convention Center, and serve as an innovative model for sustainable cultural and civic investment.

The goals of the The Next Stage planning process are to:

  • Boost Denver’s cultural and creative vitality
  • Activate a premier arts complex that contributes to an economically thriving downtown experience
  • Reflect and attract Denver’s vibrant and growing population
  • Realize an innovative model for a financially sustainable cultural and civic investment

Executive Leadership Team
Assembled by Mayor Michael B. Hancock, the ELT is an advisory group charged with exploring the future of the Denver Performing Arts Complex. It is responsible for using public input, an Urban Design Framework Plan, and other due diligence to develop and vet recommendations and, with the help of the contracted firm, deliver the vision plan and a series of recommendations to the Mayor’s Office.

Process
This planning process will include two major components:

  1. An Urban Design Framework Plan to understand existing physical conditions and provide high-level guiding principles for future work. This study will include both the Arts Complex and the Colorado Convention Center.
  2. A Master Plan for the complex will begin upon the conclusion of the Urban Framework Plan. The Master Plan will make recommendations regarding the future of the Arts Complex including cultural infrastructure, land use, programming and other potential amenities.

The ELT’s process will run parallel to the Urban Design Framework Plan and inform the Master Plan by organizing its investigation into three focus areas that will support and reflect land use decisions and other recommendations:

  1. Understanding the business models, needs and aspirations of the current Resident Companies, prospective tenants, and other stakeholders, such as the Denver Theatre District, restaurateurs, neighboring property owners, etc.
  2. Exploring changes in the marketplace – consumer behaviors, cultural consumption, audience trends, demographics, etc. – and
  3. Examining innovative models for arts center activation

It is anticipated that the Urban Design Framework Plan, Vision Plan and ELT recommendation will be completed by the end of 2015.
