What is an Atlas for?
Maps of the way we move in our communities look very different for someone driving a car, someone taking the bus, someone walking a dog, a pickpocket, children on a treasure hunt, and pigeons. (Pigeons aren’t too different from drunk squirrels who think they can fly.) The People’s Atlas of the Future examines the history of the community and how it informs our place in it today, and allows us to dream about what we want to make in the future!
This time we’re in Westwood, collaborating on all things with our friends and multi-generational residents and artists from D3 Arts, Santiago and Lala Jaramillo. Traditionally, communities center education in one form or another, formal or informal, inside or outside of buildings, passing along wisdom (and some not-so-wise things as well!) from generation to generation. What does education mean for your community? What does it look like? Does it need a building? And most importantly, who decides?
Come explore this broad issue and hear stories from local residents impacted by school closings and immigration-related barriers.
“What else will happen?”
Thanks for asking, a ridiculous amount of things actually:
• Aztec dance from Kalpulli Tepeyollotl
• Photography installation
• Poetic Incantation from Molina Speaks
• Community Social Astrology from Ramon Gabrieloff-Parish
• Oaxacan Food from La Reyna del Sur
• Video exploring the impact of tree canopies from Adán de la Garza
• A short throw (some might say “pirate”) radio broadcast of neighborhood history, present, and future stories.
• Classic cars
• A tiny winter walk
• Live music from special guests
• A Physical Atlas
• Cookies! (of course)
