DENVER – Denver Arts & Venues today released a request for qualifications as it seeks to work with an individual, organization or team of art historians, researchers, public historians, or community archivists to research the historical background and untold stories of approximately 20 public artworks and monuments in Civic Center Park.

The researcher or research team will conduct the research including potential interviews with people connected to the artworks or monuments and produce a report. The allocated total budget for the project is approximately $50,000.00.

"Uncovering the history, context and stories behind these artworks is such important work," said Tariana Navas-Nieves, deputy director for Denver Arts & Venues. "By embracing a diverse range of perspectives, we unlock a richer, more inclusive narrative that honors those whose voices may have been overlooked. This endeavor not only deepens our understanding of the past but also informs how we meaningfully consider the commemorative landscape.”

Funding for this project comes from The Monuments Project, a multi-year $500 million commitment from the Mellon Foundation aimed at transforming the nation’s commemorative landscape to ensure that our histories are completely and accurately represented.

This project is open to researchers or research teams residing in the U.S. Applicants may apply as a single researcher or multi-person collaborative group. If applying as a team, please submit one résumé for the team, with no more than one page per team member.

Proposals should be submitted by October 14, 10 a.m. via Submittable. The budget for the monument audit project is $50,000.

Additionally, Denver Arts & Venues will host a pre-proposal meeting on September 25, 5:30-6:30 p.m.. Interested parties should register for this virtual meeting on Eventbrite. The meeting will cover project backgrounds and goals, and the application process for this RFQ.
